United Nations Inter-Agency Games 2024
The United Nations is an international organization founded in the aftermath of World War II with the primary goal of promoting peace, security, cooperation, and development among its member states. It functions as a forum for nations to collectively address global issues and find diplomatic solutions.
In 1968, at the invitation of the "Commission des Sports de l'Association du personnel de l'UNESCO," a sporting event was held in Paris between teams from the United Nations in Geneva and UNESCO. Mr. René Maheu, Director-General of UNESCO, donated a trophy for the occasion, thus giving birth to the Inter-Agency Games, whose spirit has endured, although the current name was only adopted in 1972. However, the principle of rotating the Games began from the start, and the program initially included five events: chess, soccer, table tennis, tennis, and men’s volleyball.
With great enthusiasm, we took on the challenge of the Inter-Agency Games and welcomed around 1,500 participants from 140 different countries to Lloret de Mar, in the beautiful region of Catalonia, Spain. The event took place from October 23 to 27, 2024, with the opening ceremony on the 23rd, competitions from the 22nd to the 26th, the closing ceremony and gala on the evening of the 26th, and regular departures starting on the 27th.
In total, competitions were held across 16 distinct sports:
