Women's European Lacrosse Championship 2024

The city of Braga, Portugal, had the honor of hosting the Women’s European Lacrosse Championship (WELC) from July 10 to 20, 2024, once again demonstrating its capability to hold an event of this magnitude. The championship brought together the top lacrosse teams from 19 countries, competing for the title of European Champions and for their place in the World Championship. For those who couldn’t attend the event in person, it was broadcast for free on the official YouTube channel.

Braga, known for its rich history and vibrant culture, provided a stunning backdrop for the championships, having previously earned the title of Best European Destination in 2021 and European City of Sport in 2018. Often referred to as the "Rome of Portugal" due to its abundance of beautiful churches and religious sites, Braga offers visitors a unique blend of ancient traditions and modern amenities. Its charming streets are filled with historical landmarks, bustling markets, and delightful cafés, making it a perfect destination for both athletes and spectators.

The championship took place across five different venues:

- Estádio 1º de Maio (main venue)

- Campo da Ponte

- Campo Camélias 1

- Campo Camélias 2: used for training and friendly matches

- Complexo Rodovia (fields 1 and 2): training only

The winner of the WELC 2024 was the England team, followed by Israel in 2nd place and Scotland in 3rd. The MVP award was presented to Anna Lottmann from the Croatian team.

To celebrate the successful conclusion of the event, a farewell party was held at Jardim dos Coimbras on July 20, including food and drinks, marking the end of a memorable occasion.

This event has been nominated for Best Sports Event at the Braga Sports Gala, which took place this past Monday, October 14, 2024.
